artist statement
Focusing on the interaction and layering of color and pattern, I let my inner positive personality shine through. Working with glass brings balance to my life and is expressed with contemporary and graphical properties of balance, line, shape, color and form. I would like the viewer to feel a sense of joy and serenity, to follow the shapes with their eyes like a path to a better place in their world. It represents soaring through the air onward and upward toward new opportunities—the positive unknown.
artist biography
Merritt M. Menefee-Johnson was always drawing or painting from a very young age. Growing up in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, her dream from the time she was five years old was to be an “artist”. This passion for color and creativity led to her study of Interior Design at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. Her education at NAU included the study of Interior Architecture and the principles and elements of design. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design and began her career in Tempe, Arizona. She felt a strong magnetism toward art glass, mesmerized by the way light danced with glass. Merritt found a gateway and opportunity to study under the fused glass artist, Lucy Enos, and discovered her passion of fusing glass—a dream come true. A dream that was once only admiration was brought to reality. Merritt currently is working from her multi-kiln glass studio, mmm design studio, in Gilbert, Arizona, and following her dream.
